Peel Street Reconstruction

Project Information

The reconstruction of Peel Street has been identified as a project in the Town’s Development Charges Background Study (DCBS) for some time. The project could not be advanced until after the heavy construction associated with local development took place. The DCBS had identified reconstruction of Peel Street to an Urban road cross-section with sidewalk, street illumination and street trees, but upon further review it was determined that the current urban and rural road standards would not meet the project’s goals. A hybrid Rural/Urban Road with a 2.7m wide multi-use trail running parallel for pedestrians and cyclists was recommended for the reconstruction.

In April 2021, The Town of The Blue Mountains received the preliminary design report for the Peel Street Reconstruction from MTE Consultants. The preliminary design has provided the Town with a flexible outline for the project in the future. Features of the reconstruction will include an improvement to profile of Peel Street, which will improve sightlines for drivers and pedestrians. A replacement of the pavement structure was also recommended to meet current standards. The safety of pedestrians and cyclists is also being acknowledged with the addition of the 2.7-metre-wide multi-use trail with streetlighting.

The Peel Street Reconstruction project will be informed by the West Side Water Storage Municipal Class Environmental Assessment to determine whether a new trunk water main will be part of the final design. Local sewer needs will also be considered to inform the final design and whether a new sewer will be required as part of the project. The proposed storm system will be influenced by the final design on the shoreline works to determine how the flows will be outlet and how Peel Street and Bay Street will be constructed as they approach Georgian Bay and the Beaver River.

The Town will proceed with engaging a consultant through the request for proposal process for the final design and project management. The Final Design for the project is expected to be completed in 2022 with construction to follow in 2023. The full preliminary design report and the 30% project design are now available for public viewing.

The Town continues to value public input and Public Information Centres will be held to share progress and receive feedback from residents and stakeholders throughout the project timeline.
